50 Vietnamese conversation starters

Vietnamese has no single word for 'you'. People choose a family-style word based on age and gender: anh (older brother) for a man a bit older than you, chị (older sister) for a woman a bit older, em for someone younger. With a stranger whose age you don't know, bạn ('friend') is the safe, neutral default, and you can call yourself mình, a warm, casual 'I'. If the other person later calls you em or anh, it's fine to follow their lead.

A very common friendly greeting is 'Bạn ăn cơm chưa?' (Have you eaten yet?): it means 'how are you', not an invitation. Vietnam also has three regions (North, Centre, South) with different accents and dishes, a great topic.

Saying hello

Polite and safe with anyone.

The friendly everyday greeting for a stranger online.
3. Chào anh! / Chào chị!
Hello! (to a man / woman a bit older than you)
Use only if you know they are older; otherwise stick with bạn.

I'm fine, thank you. And you?
6. Rất vui được làm quen với bạn.
Very nice to get to know you.
In the South the first word sounds more like 'rut'.
7. Mình tên là Minh. Còn bạn tên gì?
My name is Minh. And what's your name?
A first name is enough.
8. Bạn ăn cơm chưa?
Have you eaten yet?
A caring way of saying 'how are you'; not an invitation.

Where you are and time zones

9. Bạn đến từ đâu?
Where are you from?
Asking about the country is normal; no need to ask for more.
10. Mình đến từ Hàn Quốc.
I'm from South Korea.
Swap in your own country.
11. Bên đó bây giờ là mấy giờ?
What time is it over there now?
12. Ở chỗ mình bây giờ là tám giờ tối.
It's eight in the evening where I am.
sáng = morning, chiều = afternoon, tối = evening.
13. Mình chưa đến Việt Nam bao giờ.
I've never been to Vietnam.
14. Bạn ở miền Bắc, miền Trung hay miền Nam?
Are you in the North, the Centre or the South?
A general, friendly question: each region has its own accent and food.

15. Món ăn bạn thích nhất là gì?

16. Mình rất thích phở!

Could you recommend a local specialty for me?
đặc sản = a dish or product a place is famous for.
18. Ở Việt Nam, bữa sáng mọi người thường ăn gì?
In Vietnam, what do people usually eat for breakfast?
Many people eat out: phở, bánh mì or xôi (sticky rice).
19. Bạn có ăn cay được không?
Can you handle spicy food?
20. Bạn có thích uống cà phê không?
Do you like coffee?
Cà phê sữa đá (iced coffee with condensed milk) is a national favourite.
21. Nghe ngon quá!
That sounds so tasty!

Weather and seasons

22. Hôm nay thời tiết bên đó thế nào?
What's the weather like there today?
In the South people often say sao instead of thế nào.
23. Ở đây trời nóng quá.
It's so hot here.
lạnh (lahn) = cold.
24. Ở đây đang mưa to.
It's raining hard here.
25. Bây giờ bên đó đang là mùa gì?
What season is it there right now?
The North has four seasons; the South mostly has a dry season and a rainy season.

nhé softens a request, like 'OK?'.

41. "Dễ thương" nghĩa là gì?
What does 'dễ thương' mean?
It means 'cute, lovely'. Put any word in the quotes.
