How this tool works
Your Day Master is the Heavenly Stem of the day you were born — one of ten: Jia and Yi (Wood), Bing and Ding (Fire), Wu and Ji (Earth), Geng and Xin (Metal), Ren and Gui (Water). This calculator uses the same engine as the Destiny Day app.
Days are counted in the unbroken sixty-day cycle, the year turns at Lichun (Start of Spring) and the month at the solar terms. If you add a birth time, the hour pillar is worked out from local solar time for the city you choose; without a time you still get your Day Master.
The balance of the five elements is weighed like this: each of the four stems counts once, the hidden stems inside each branch count by their share, and the month branch counts double because it is the season. When your own element and the one that feeds you hold a large share and the birth month supports you, the Day Master is called strong; with little support it is weak.
The helpful element is the one that brings the whole chart back toward the middle: support for a weak Day Master, an outlet for a strong one, and the climate first when a summer chart lacks Water or a winter chart lacks Fire. The foods come from that element's traditional colours and tastes.

Questions
- Do I need my birth time?
- No. The Day Master depends only on the date. A time adds the hour pillar, which makes the element balance a little more precise.
- Why do some sites give a different Day Master?
- If you were born close to midnight, the day boundary (midnight or 11 pm) and the solar-time correction can move you to the next or previous day.
- Is this the same as a Western sun sign?
- No. Sun signs follow the sun's position by month; the Day Master follows the sixty-day count of the calendar.
